4 Tips To Stick To A Healthy Diet When On Holiday!

0

Let’s kickstart this blog by saying that when you’re on holiday, it’s time to enjoy yourself. If you want that icecream, that extra portion of chips or that 11am beer, then you should go for it. However, for many people, when they’re away, they do like to remain active and eat and drink in moderation, in order to feel their best without getting uncomfortable or bloated.

So, if you’re looking for a bit of balance without restricting yourself, you’re in the right place!

Start Your Day With A High Protein Breakfast

The best thing you can do in order to start your day right is to eat a high protein breakfast. When you start your day with something that doesn’t contain much protein, and is usually high in sugar, it can cause your blood sugar to spike and then dip, so you’ll lack energy, and your body will naturally crave more sugar throughout the day as a result. So, your energy will fluctuate and you’ll likely feel quite deflated by the end of the day.

Instead, when you start the day with a high protein breakfast, not only will you feel fuller for longer, but your blood sugar will stabilise, so you’ll be less likely to crave sugar throughout the day. Equally, a healthy breakfast will give you more energy and help to maintain muscle when you’re away (although you’re not going to lose muscle mass in a week, it can just help you to remain feeling strong).

So, rather than reaching straight for the croissants and pancakes at breakfast, start with higher protein options. Things like eggs, bacon, sausage, Greek yoghurt and beans, will help you to feel full and give your body the fuel it needs. Combine this with a portion of carbs like toast, then also some fibre like tomatoes, mushrooms, spinach or fruit.

Once you’ve had this delicious high protein breakfast, if you’re wanting some sugar like a pancake or croissant to finish it off, go for it! Your body will already have had the fuel it needs to feel great throughout the day, so if you want a treat, you deserve it.

Get Your Steps In and Keep Body Moving

Another way to feel healthy without making sacrifices when you’re on holiday is to get your steps in and to keep your body moving. Holidays are for rest and recuperation of course, however most people will feel good if they’re moving their body at least a bit each day. So, each day, try to think about how you can incorporate some movement. This might be a swim in the pool or sea before lunch, perhaps you hire a bike to explore the local area, maybe you could walk rather than get public transport or a taxi to a restaurant.

You could also look into if there’s any local classes like beach front yoga, which can be a wonderful experience. If there’s a gym and you fancy going a couple of times then go for it, but if you want to relax and just make some small adjustments to feel your best, then do that instead.

Alternate Water With Alcohol

Many people like a drink when they’re on holiday, however it can cause you to become very dehydrated, especially if you’re not replacing it with enough water. You’ll feel sluggish and not be able to enjoy your holiday, and in more serious cases, it could actually cause you to faint and potentially worse. So, no matter what we’d recommend that you’re drinking 3 litres of water a day when you’re away.

Spread this out throughout the day to get the maximum benefit, particularly alternating any alcoholic drinks with water. You could also aim to eat foods that hydrate you throughout the day, like cucumber, tomatoes, celery, apples, lettuce, watermelon and peaches.

Take Some High Protein Snacks

Last but not least, we’d recommend taking some high protein snacks. Often high protein snacks are quite hard to get hold of, especially if you’re somewhere quite remote, so having some with you can be helpful when you just want a healthy snack. Things like individually packaged packs of nuts, protein bars, individual packets of protein powder and beef jerky can all easily be taken with you and are available whenever you need them.

You can easily also create a high protein lunch this way if you’re on the go, by picking up protein filled pre packed sandwiches, your protein snack and a pot of fruit. You’ll be able to find options to eat protein when you’re away, but this can just help to give that extra boost! Just make sure you save some room for an icecream or two.

Final Thoughts

Going on holiday is all about relaxation, exploring new places and enjoying yourself, however some small adjustments can help you to stay feeling comfortable and energised to really make the most of your trip! These small changes can make a big difference to how you feel, so are absolutely worth adding to your trip.
